This little water body is hidden away in the heart of urban Mumbai and is one of Mumbai's holiest sites and the oldest surviving structure in the city.
According to folklore, the Banganga came into being when Ram, the Hindu God, stopped at the spot five thousand years ago in search of his kidnapped wife Sita. It sprung forth when Rama, the exiled hero of the epic Ramayana stopped at the spot five thousand years ago, in search of his kidnapped wife Sita. Overcome with fatigue and thirst, he asked his brother Laxman to bring him some water. Laxman instantly shot an arrow into the ground, and water gushed forth from the Ganga, over a thousand miles away. The water in this tank is apparently beieve to from the Holy Ganga itself!
The weirdest part about this place is that there's the giant sprawling apartment complexes on one side and the chawls and small hutments on the other. And the journey there will have you descending through the trademark cramped, unkempt chawls of Mumbai.
Both my trips to this place have been in the middle of the night when its the quietest - and trust me, its heavenly! It sort of did remind me of the banks of the Varanasi in a way. You see those steps descending into the water, the temples surrounding the steps - it just gives you that aura of holiness. Then you realize that the Banganga is also a very dirty place. But then its fine, God did invent the garbage bins too :)

Bollywood 101
Four things that are "ubiquitous" in every Bollywood movie:
1. There's always a happy ending
2. The hero always gets the heroine at the end of the movie (even if he's about to die)
3. No matter how much deep sh*t you're in, a good song & dance routine can solve all of life's problems.
4. Beware! Divine intervention can happen anytime!
